Mel Gibson's Sequel to "The Passion of the Christ" is Officially Moving Forward

Mel Gibson's long-anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ is officially moving forward. Titled The Resurrection of the Christ, the film has secured a partnership with Lionsgate, marking a significant step in its development. A brief 20-second teaser, featuring the film's title accompanied by a musical score, was recently released to announce this collaboration.
Production is slated to commence in August 2025 at Rome's renowned Cinecittà Studios, with additional filming planned in rural locations across Southern Italy . Jim Caviezel is set to reprise his role as Jesus Christ. Given the two-decade gap since the original film's release, advanced de-aging techniques will be employed to maintain continuity in Caviezel's portrayal.
Gibson has described the sequel as a "metaphysical acid trip," indicating a departure from traditional storytelling. The narrative is expected to explore supernatural themes, including the fall of the angels, Christ's descent into hell, and the events leading up to the death of the last apostle . This ambitious approach suggests a non-linear structure that delves into various realms beyond the physical.
The screenplay is a collaborative effort between Mel Gibson, his brother Donal Gibson, and Randall Wallace, who co-wrote the original film. While an exact release date has not been announced, the film is anticipated to premiere in 2026 .
