Boyhood Indie Movie 2014 News, Rumors, Reveals and Teasers: Patricia Arquette and Lorelei Linklater Star in Flick
The beauty of independent movies is that film makers more than often than not have the creative freedom that their studio funded counterparts cannot afford. With big studios breathing down your back your creativity might be stifled a little bit. Written, directed and produced by Richard Linklater, Boyhood is one of those movies where creative freedom is evident. The filming of the movie was shot from the year 2002 to 2013 and has already won nine of the eleven awards it was nominated for including the Berlin International Film Festival award for Best Director and might as well find itself on the Oscars list for 2015. The movie has gotten multiple good reviews including a 5/5 rating from Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian.
The movie follows a boy Mason Evans Jr. from the year 2002 when he was six when we first meet him, him and his sister hear their mother and her boyfriend arguing. Their mother, Olivia moves the family so she can attend the University of Houston and complete her studies. Jump to 2004 and Olivia takes Ethan to class with her introducing him to her professor, Bill. Bill and Olivia get married and blend their families, however Bill becomes and abusive alcoholic and Olivia moves her family out and files or divorce. The year is now 2008 and Samantha has a boyfriend which comes to the attention of her father Ethan Sr. who gives her the talk.
Ethan, Samantha and their mother now live in San Marcos and Olivia teaches in a college where she meets her new love interest Jim, an Afghanistan veteran. Our boy Ethan is now grown and has started experimenting with marijuana. By 2010 15 year old Mason is now into photography and has remarried with a child. Mason meets Sheena his new girlfriend and his mother divorces Jim. 2012 and Ethan is ready to go off to college, his mother is alone again and confess she is disappointed in life.
The movie traces a boy and his family from 2002 to 2012, capturing the moment when he transits from boy to man, proving that it is not just a single moment or a single experience but rather a collection of moments. The boy who was followed from the age of six is Ellar Coltrane. Other people on the cast list are Patricia Arquette and Lorelei Linklater. This is a movie that is worth seeking out and watching.
