MacBook Air Users Expected Retina Display for 2014, No Update during Apple Event, Here's Why
MacBook Air fans were probably waiting for news regarding their Mac Air during the Apple event on October 16. Unfortunately, no news or whatsoever regarding the Mac Air came up during the event. There were rumors that the MacBook Air might get an update, as in the Retina-display, just like the other Apple devices that were announced in the Apple event. The rumor started with Digitimes stating,
"Shipments of a new MacBook Air, reportedly equipped with a 12-inch Retina screen, have begun in small volumes...Apple is set to host an event on October 16 where it is expected to unveil new iPads and the new 12-inch MacBook air, the sources added."
Naturally, Mac Air users started hoping that the rumor is true, but to their disappointment, it wasn't, and there seems to be a pretty good explanation as to why this is the case, or why it's going to be challenging for Apple to add the Retina-display update to their MacBook Air series without compromising the best features of the Air laptop.
Those who opt for the MacBook Air series are usually after these features: light, thin, with good battery life. It targets students and professionals who need a portable but powerful device, that are also reliable enough to stay powered-on without the repetitive charging for the busiest of days. According to Engadget, packing the Retina-display will compromise the laptop's battery life:
"Stuffing more pixels into an LCD typically requires not just stronger backlights (since there's less light reaching each pixel), but also graphics processing powerful enough to draw all that extra content".
The source continues to explain in detail, also stating that the MacBook Pro line already had the Retina-display since two years ago, but that it came with a thicker chassis to support its bigger battery and faster processor. Yet, as stated earlier, MacBook Air isn't about all that. Since Air series have to embody a "low-power display and a quick-yet-efficient processor into a very slim, affordable machine", the Macbook might not be an Air anymore if the Retina-display technology is stuffed into it. Read on the rest from Engadget to get the detailed explanation.
For now, the Retina-display is not going to come easy for the MacBook Air users. Apple will have to make a lot of changes and improvements with the Air hardware to make the Retina-display possible, without compromising the features that the Air stands for.
What do you think? Do we Air users really need the Retina-display?
