Singing Nun Releases Debut Single: Madonna's Like a Virgin Reinvented
A surprisingly unconventional performance in the music industry, Sister Cristina Scuccia's debut single, Madonna's Like a Virgin, will be released Nov. 11.
It bears some similarities to that of Madonna's 1984 pop version, however, she renders it in a more solemn tone, sounding like a secular prayer, and some of the lyrics were omitted.
She revealed that some modifications were made in a statement in International Business Time, "We have transformed this song from the pop-dance piece, which it was, into a romantic ballad...something more similar to a secular prayer than to a pop song."
Considering the social norms being observed among the religious sector, her move is such a liberating act that will somehow spread the domain of the church outside the confines of religious duties, which would enable them to take part in a larger community, handling situations entirely different from their regular tasks.
Sister Cristina explained in a statement through an Italian newspaper Avvenire: "I chose it myself. Without any intention to provoke or shock. Reading the text, without being influenced by previous [versions], it turns out that it's a song on the ability of love to renew people. To redeem them from their past. And that's how I wanted to interpret it. For this we turned from the track pop-dance that was, into a romantic ballad. [It] is something more akin to a secular prayer that in a pop song."
Thus, it is still in accordance with the Christian belief which is focused on the immense power of love to reshape people's destiny, in the same manner that it symbolizes the omnipotent God.
Hence, her single, the most awaited Madonna's Like a Virgin, could be as phenomenal as her extraordinary performance in her rendition of the Italian version of The Voice, which caught in a trance, not only the judges but the audience as well. Not to mention that first and foremost, she is a nun.
She has made her first public performance which brought her to the limelight, and fortunately was not met with massive criticisms from the Roman Catholic Church.
