U2 working on Musical Film 'Sing Street' with 'Once' director John Carney
U2's, Bono and The Edge are teaming up with director John Carney ("Once") for a new musical film called Sing Street. The storyline will be based on director John Carney's childhood, focussing on a boy who uses music to help him cope as his life is changed when he moves from a posh private school to the inner-city. Bono and the Edge have been enlisted to write songs for the film and collaborate with Carney on the musical aspects of the production.
Official project description from the Weinstein Company is: In 1980s Dublin, a recession forces Cosmo out of his comfortable private school and into survival mode at the inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. "Sing Street" tells the story of how he turns to music, forming a ragtag band, shooting scrappy music videos, and finding refuge and love with the beautiful Raphina.
"When I read the script for Sing Street it took me back to my days in the music business and I can't wait to hear the soundtrack to this beautiful film," said Harvey Weinstein in a statement. Sing Street will begin production in Dublin in September. There's no release date yet set for the film, nor any cast announced.
This is not the first time U2 has worked in film, they just won a Golden Globe earlier this year for their song "Ordinary Love," which was a part of the Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
U2 is also still working on their new studio album which has yet to announce an official release date.
