Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Update: Upcoming Church Wedding Shows Couple's Commitment to Faith, Says Archbishop
Prince Harry of Wales and his soon-to-be wife, actress Meghan Markle, demonstrate their commitment to their faith while making plans for their wedding.
According to Canterbury Archbishop Justin Welby, the decision of the engaged couple to tie the knot at St. George’s Chapel at England’s Windsor Castle is not only an exhibition of tradition. Rather, it reflects their strong faith that influenced their decision to exchange wedding vows at the renowned church.
"This is no tick-box exercise for them, 'Oh we ought to get married in a church,'" Welby told BBC. "There is a profound sense of commitment and seriousness both about their faith and about their lives together, which is quite inspirational.
The upcoming wedding between the 33-year-old royal and 36-year-old “Suits” star is set to take place on May 19, 2018. As noted by Welby, the couple’s choice to get married in church indicates a highly relevant message to everyone who will witness the event.
"It's important because they'll look at it and see a model of how two people commit their lives to one another before God in the presence of millions of people," the archbishop explained. "And that is going to be a wonderful — it's always a beautiful moment. Every wedding is profoundly beautiful."
Markle is prepping up for her baptismal and confirmation rites in the Church of England where Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Harry’s grandmother, remains supreme governor.
The Los Angeles native previously tied the knot with Jewish producer Trevor Engelson and were together for two years. However, the couple separated in 2013. While the Church of England has been known for opposing divorce, Welby has shown his support for the marriage between Prince Harry and Markle. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether Welby will be presiding over the highly-anticipated wedding ceremony.
"I am so happy that Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have chosen to make their vows before God," Welby shared in an official statement last month. "I wish them many years of love, happiness and fulfillment and ask that God blesses them throughout their married life together."
