John Mayer Pays Tribute to Christchurch Massacre Victims by Singing "How Great Thou Art"
Pop singer John Mayer paid tribute to the victims of the Christchurch massacre this week at Auckland's Spark Arena. Mayer was joined on stage by a kapa haka group and sang a touching rendition of How Great Thou Art. New Zealander Bella Kalolo joined Mayer for the rendition in te reo.
"Thank you for coming out under such heavy circumstances. It means a lot to me," Mayer said at the top of a show he did last month. The singer was referring to the deadly mosque shooting that took place in Christchurch in New Zealand.
Mayer kicked off his tour in the Oceania country just days after the tragic massacre, which claimed the lives of 50 people and where dozens were injured at two separate mosques holding Friday prayers.
The Christchurch mosque shootings were two consecutive terrorist attacks at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, during Friday Prayer on 15 March 2019. The attacks began at the Al Noor Mosque in the suburb of Riccarton at 1:40 p.m. and continued at the Linwood Islamic Centre at about 1:55 p.m. The gunman livestreamed the first attack on Facebook Live. The attacks killed 50 people and injured 50 others.
At the end of the show, the singer said he had not planned on playing one particular song but would do so in light of the events in Christchurch. "I've been thinking about you non-stop. I didn't expect to play this song tonight, but it's one from our heart to yours - The Heart of Life.
