Seth Crane Shares About His Calling, Songwriting & His New Album
Kentucky singer/songwriter Seth Crane has just released his debut single, "I Surrender." The song, the title track from his upcoming project, is being serviced to Christian AC radio outlets.
The son of music ministers, Crane's foundation in Christ was laid and nurtured in his hometown of Hickory, Kentucky, with Crane saying his personal relationship with Christ began when he attended children's camp at First Baptist Church Mayfield. As Crane began establishing his own musical roots, he took guitar lessons and learned to pick out movie themes on the piano, early steps that have led to his first single release.
Q: Tell us a little about how you became a Christian.
When I was in the 7th grade, I attended Youth Camp with FBC, Mayfield. The camp pastor talked about sin and I felt convicted. I went to one of the counselors and talked to him about what I was feeling. He explained more to me about sin and what it meant to become a Christian. That night I gave my heart to Christ.
When I came home from camp, the seriousness of what had happened to me with Christ didn't stay with me for a couple of years. But when I started my freshman year of high school, I became hungry again to follow Christ and renew my relationship with Him.
Q. How then did the Lord call you into the music ministry?
My junior year of high school, our youth group went to Orange Beach, AL, for camp. Rend Collective was our worship leaders for the camp. I really loved their music and ministry and just felt how awesome it would be to be involved in that kind of ministry. I came home and began playing their music in our youth services and just knew that was what I wanted to do with my life.
Q. Tell us more about your ministry now.
Every weekend, I am playing somewhere different, whether it is a Saturday event or a Sunday church service leading worship. It is a great feeling to be able to reach people with the music the Lord has given me.
Q: How did the Lord lead you to record your new album "I Surrender"?
The first song written was "I Surrender", which came from some difficult times. After I had written three more songs, I wrote "Love Is An Ocean". When I played that song for my family, they were like, "you really need to let someone hear this and see what God may want to do with your music." We reached out to a family friend to help us with bookings and she connected us with a local studio producer. He told me that I needed to round it out to ten songs. So, the Lord gave me the rest of the songs in about two weeks. The album was recorded and produced in 2018 and it has taken time to figure out how to best get it out beyond my church, family and friends.
Q: Did you write all of the songs on your album? What were some of the highlights for you as you were writing for this album?
Yes. When I got near the end of writing for the album, I came home from work one morning, I was thinking about what to write for the last song. I was reminded of an old hymn and its melody. So, I decided I wanted the last song to have more of a hymn feel to it. The melody came easy, but the message came from verses that were on these silicone bracelets that I like to wear. One of them has my favorite verse, which is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." So, it just felt right to build the song around this verse.
"Fly Away" came through the passing of a very close family friend. My mom and I had been to the hospital to visit him and his family one evening. He was getting close to passing away. On the way home, Mom and I talked about what he must have been experiencing that night with lingering here on earth but getting so close to entering heaven. From there, the song was written. He went to be with the Lord that night, as well.
Q: What is the story behind "Rescue Me"?
This song came along with writing "Lead You Astray". There really isn't a big story behind it. It sort of came from nowhere, other than the Lord. There has been a lot of good feedback from the song. We all need the Lord to rescue us throughout our lives from one thing or another. And, I think this song really speaks to many who find themselves in need of God's rescuing.
Q: Why are you excited about your new single, "I Surrender"?
This song is the anthem of the whole CD and the anthem of my life. The Lord gave us everything, His love, His life, His grace....so, we need to give Him everything, too.
Q: How do you wish God would use these songs to minister to your listeners?
I would love for the gospel to be shared through these songs and then for people to be encouraged, inspired and uplifted. I want to reach as many people as possible so that they can come to Christ and find hope and everlasting life.
