Lester Wisbrod, Former Hollywood Cameraman Claims that he is the Inventor of the Selfie
Selfies have been proved not to be the premise of insecure teenagers using their bathrooms mirrors. Television and movie stars alike have posted them on social media. Even Potus did so in an international event as we remember. But now there is one cameraman who claims that he is the inadvertent inventor of the selfie saying he has been doing them since the 80s. Meet 67 year-old former Hollywood cameraman Lesley Wisbrod. He claims that he used to pull out his canon and take a pic whenever he found himself alone. He also says that he would chat up some of his clients and ask for am photo with them.
Ellen DeGeneres' photos of herself and several other actors at the Oscars which was taken by Bradley Cooper is one of the true classics among the world of self obsessed teenagers and cell phone amateurs as well as celebrities doing candid shots. However, Lester's show a different picture of rawness without the poise and fugazi of image that is seen in most shots done today. Now he insists that he wants his due-possibly rights or a patent..Who knows?
The photos began in the early 80s and he used the Canon's Sure Shot 35-millimeter compact camera which was one of the first autofocus models that came into the market. Of course the technique and the equipment was not as good as what is available today and that is why he claims his first shot with comedian Art Buchwald was a bit blurry. But he soon got the hang of it. According to him, the images then were 'silly shots', practice for something better in focus and poise. Lester did not always work behind the camera. He was brought up in a middle class family and joined the air force working in radar operations while serving his country in Vietnam. He enrolled at Nevada Southern University which is now UNLV and got a job at local television station KLAS-TV as a cameraman. He says that he loved it.
He went on to work on other shows which were big hits in the eighties like 'Lifestyles of the rich and famous', as well as 'A Current Affair'. He would then chat up some of the clients who he would be working with on assignment and ask for a photo with them. Back then he say's that almost all of them obliged and it warmed them up. He believed that the brief moment of physical contact during the selfie pose disarmed them; probably because they were not as drenched by paparazzi back then as stars are at the present.
