Phil Wickham Earns Sixth Christian Airplay No. 1 With “What an Awesome God”

Phil Wickham celebrates his sixth career No. 1 on Billboard's Christian Airplay chart as "What an Awesome God" ascends 2-1 on the Aug. 16-dated survey. The song saw a 10% increase to 5.1 million audience impressions during the Aug. 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate.
On Billboard's Christian AC Airplay chart, the single holds at No. 1 for a second consecutive week, lifting Wickham's career total to eight chart-toppers in that format.
Originally written by the late Rich Mullins, "What an Awesome God" was refreshed in April with new verses by Wickham and Jonathan Smith, paired with Mullins' beloved original chorus.
The track follows "The King Is in the Room," which peaked at No. 4 in July, and comes on the heels of "Angels (Glory to God)," which topped Christian Airplay for two weeks during the 2024 holiday season. Wickham first hit No. 1 in 2014 with "This Is Amazing Grace," which dominated for 10 weeks.
With this latest achievement, Wickham's Christian Airplay No. 1 singles now include:
-
This Is Amazing Grace (2014)
-
Battle Belongs (2021)
-
House of the Lord (2021)
-
This Is Our God (2023)
-
Angels (Glory to God) (2024)
-
What an Awesome God (2025)
Wickham's consistent success over more than a decade underscores his status as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Christian music, blending heartfelt worship with memorable melodies that resonate across generations.
