Cinemax's Period Medical Drama ‘The Knick' Gets Labor Day Viewing on HBO
Cinemax's new period medical drama that stars Clive Owen as Dr. John Thackery, whose character is based on William Stewart Halsted, a historical figure and directed by Oscar winning Steven Soderbergh gets a three-episode marathon on Cinemax's parent company HBO on Labor Day, Sept. 1 starting at 8 pm.
The Labor Day viewing is part of HBO and Cinemax's plan to give the new series an audience boost, although the series has already been renewed for a second season with 10 episodes even before the season premiere on August 8. It goes to say that HBO and Cinemax are really serious and confident about building this drama and its high potentials, as they also made the pilot episode available free for streaming on YouTube.
"The Knick" is set in New York during the early 1900s in a hospital called the Knickerbocker Hospital, which the word Knick is abbreviated from. It chronicles the stories of surgeons, nurses and staff who come face to face with challenges to overcome the limitations of medicine to save people in a time with high mortality rates. Coupled with their own personal battles, such as drug addiction and racism; they seek to maintain the highest quality care while trying to enchant a wealthy clientele.
During its opening weekend, it recorded a total gross audience of 1.7 million, after the successive replays that netted 303,000, a special Saturday screening on HBO gathering in 533,000 and its average 354,000 viewers on its regular 10pm time slot on Cinemax on its first episode. It seems that even though the series didn't record groundbreaking viewership number on its pilot episode, it shows that the series is slowly but surely gaining momentum; as it gained additional audience through repeat airings.
It's been getting generally favorable reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes stating it as "sincere, emotional period television that takes a down-to-earth, no-holds-barred approach to vital topics." And also being described as a little bit of "House" meets "Grey's Anatomy."
"The Knick" will resume its fourth episode on Sept. 5, 10pm on Cinemax.
