NBA Trade Rumors: Rajon Rondo May Still Be Traded Before Deadline, But Will He?
Rajon Rondo will be a free agent by July when his contract with the Boston Celtics expire, giving rise to speculations that he will likely be traded before the February deadline arrives. Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy wrote: "Unless Boston is able to land a star player who would persuade Rajon Rondo to sign a new long-term deal (like Kevin Love could've done), then Rondo is likely gone. As I said earlier, he's at the stage of his career where he wants to contend and he's not going to be patient as Boston rebuilds with young guys. I don't think the two sides would part ways next summer, I think they would be parting ways in February before the trade deadline. It doesn't make sense for Boston to hold onto Rondo and likely lose him for nothing next offseason when they could trade him and get some assets back. Indiana, Houston, Dallas, New York, Detroit and Sacramento are the teams that come to mind who could use Rondo. I'm sure there will be plenty of suitors for him, since he's one of the league's best floor generals when healthy."
Rondo himself has repeatedly said that he wants to stay with Boston beyond the expiration date of his contract. According to Boston Globe, the Celtics team captain said: "The fans, the people here, make me want to stay. The organization has been great. I can't say enough about Danny and [majority owner] Wyc [Grousbeck]. When I walk down the street, the fans embrace me from Day 1. Even when we won a championship, people don't just appreciate us winning. It's more of a thank you. It's a love for the game. These people here know the game and they care for it. They know when you're not playing as hard as you can. The love I get is kind of overwhelming in Boston. Why wouldn't I want to stay here?"
And the sentiment is apparently mutual. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told Bill Doyle of Telegram: "I have no intention. I'm not trying to trade Rondo, but because he's a free agent this summer, he assured me that he wants to stay in Boston. We'd love to keep him in Boston. The possibility of a trade is not out of the question. Nobody is untradeable, but I don't see that happening. I love Rondo. He's a fun kid to be around. I've seen a lot of growth in him as a person and maturity through the years."
