Tom Clancy's The Division Reveals, Release and Updates: Ubisoft Technical Director, Holmquist Confirms use of In-House Game Engine, Snowdrop
At Ubisoft's press conference at the 2013 electronic entertainment Expo, we all came to know about the new title for 2015, Tom Clancy's, the Division. Apparently, the new title is a multiplayer third person shooter game which is set in a post apocalyptic setting. This is going to revolve around operation dark winter and Directive 51. As such, this is where the country is paralyzed by a disease on black Friday, hence the reason why it spreads so fast (5 days to be exact). In order to conquer the game, the players will have to team up and fight the epidemic. In order to perfect the upcoming title, Massive, Reflections as well as Red Storm developers have opted to launch from the end of 2014 to 2015 in order to take advantage of the perfect release window for the dame and to make room for further graphic enhancements on the game.
Ubisoft technical director Anders Holmquist claimed, "We use a screen-space anti-aliasing technique with custom in-house additions. We're also continually looking at improving what we have." He also thought it was practical to use an engine called Snowdrop which was personally developed by the Ubisoft team. "By having our own engine, we can focus on the areas that we think are important and build the tools and the features we need to create a fully immersive New York City in a state of emergency and chaos," he added.
It definitely seems to be working in their favor though as some people who watched the demo immediately concluded the game did the concept so much better than rival upcoming game, Destiny. In this case, Bungie; the developers, would be in a lot of trouble. In the video it was shown that Manhattan was one of the contextual settings and thus New York will be a main focus. Holmist emphasizes, "We are trying to recreate the most detailed New York City ever shown in a video game. Snowdrop has many different tools that make it possible. With the building tech for example, we can create a huge, diverse, and detailed city."
