'The Book of Life' Review: Manolo, Joaquin, and Maria Love Triangle
"The Book of Life" is a story of three childhood friends who happened to be separated from each other. Diego Luna plays the role of Manolo, a music lover, sensitive, and bull-fighter.
"The machismo and the weight of being a bullfighter is on top of him," Director Gutierrez shared.
The other one is Channing Tatum's character, Joaquin, who is known as the hero in his hometown. The third is Zoe Zaldana's character, Maria, who is the most intelligent among them and has positive thinking. She is pursued by his friends, Manolo and Joaquin.
According to Screen Rant "The Book of Life" marks the directorial debut of Jorge R. Gutierrez, an animated film maker. In terms of film marketing, almost everything is shouldered by Guillermo del Toro as its producer. From its trailer, you'll see the well-crafted and colorful animated worlds as well as impressive designs. All of these are done by Reel FX Creative Studios.
Manolo, Joaquin, and Maria were each instructed to fulfill their family expectations from them. However, it took years before the three friends meet and reunite. These three mortals don't have any idea that two underworld immortals are having a bet over them.
Kate de Castillo's character LaMuerte and with her lover Xibalba, a glowing green immortal covered with candles and chains played by Ron Perlman, are laying a bet on who between Maria's friends will triumphantly win her heart.
When Xibalba appears to lose against LaMeurte he did something to separate Manolo from Maria through forcing Manolo into a grand journey. The journey is not just an ordinary journey because Manolo needs to go to the Land of the Remembered, a place where our beloved family goes when they eventually died.
According to Vulture, in "The Book of Life," beyond the Land of the Remembered is the forgotten land or Land of the Forgotten as they call it. The latter one is the opposite of the first one where it is joyless and no one remembers you anymore; you are forgotten by your love ones and friends. These are controlled by Xibalba.
