An Exclusive Interview with Trinity Dawson: "Making Music that Resonates with People of All Walks of Life"
Urban Inspirational recording artistTrinity Dawson is championing a new movement in what music lovers expect Gospel music to sound like. Renovating the current landscape of Gospel, Urban, and Inspirational music to develop a fresh composite sound, Dawson offers a cutting-edge approach to Gospel and Christian music with the debut release of his full-length CD WITH ALL I AM (Dawson House Productions), set to be released in stores and online everywhere on Friday, October 30, 2015.
Hallels: Trinity, thanks fo your time. Formerly you were football player, how did the Lord convince you to leave football to pursue music ministry?
Dawson: When I think about it, I suppose He (the Lord) didn't give me much of a choice. I ultimately had an injury that proved, over time, to be degenerative and it negatively impacted my ability to play at my best. As for the music, that happened gradually as I grew in the Lord and decided to totally submit my life to Him. I grew up in one of those musical families, so it's in my blood, but it was never something I personally pursued until I felt God leading me in that direction.
Hallels: On your bio, you said that you are bringing a cutting edge approach to Gospel and Christian music. How then would you describe your style of music?
Dawson: I have a very eclectic taste in music; in short, I pretty much like everything...everything that's done well and exudes creativity. As a result, I've taken a fusion approach to my music. Ultimately, you'll hear a mainstream sound with an urban flavor that, hopefully, resonates with people from all walks of life.
Hallels: Who would you say are the artists who have influenced you and your music?
Dawson: I'd have to say without question Israel Houghton has had the biggest impact on me through his Deeper Level Conference that he host every year in Houston, TX. Musically, Israel, Fred Hammond, Hillsong United, Mercy Me, Jesus Culture and John Legend are the 1st names that come to mind. Don't get me wrong, my style is a little different than theirs but I love their sound and their music has had a positive impact on me over the years.
Hallels: Congratulations on your soon-to-be-released album "With All I Am," who are some of the songwriters and producers you've worked with for this record?
Dawson: I wrote the majority of the songs on the record but I was extremely fortunate to work with Grammy Award winning writer, Aaron Sledge, on 3 of my songs. I also worked with Jameil Aossey, who just signed with Symbolic One's "S1" team and produced Jasmine Villegas' song 'Walk Away' off her new EP. I would be remise if I didn't mention Eddie Ferguson, of Walk One Productions, we collaborated on 5 songs. And last but not least I worked with Grammy Nominated producer, Terence Vaughn, on all the musical interludes/transitions on the album.
Hallels: Let's talk about your new single "Not That Easy." For our readers who may not have heard it yet, what's the song about?
Dawson: This song talks about the power that we have on the inside of us, as believers, that makes us Not That Easy to break. Many times we go through circumstances in life and we don't feel like we're strong enough to survive; but the reality of the believer is that you have the power on the inside of you that has already given you the victory. We just have to recognize it, access it and walk it out.
Hallels: How do you think your new album will speak to Christians and non-Christians?
Dawson: I've noticed over the years that, Christians and non-Christians alike, are on the search for some level of fulfillment and purpose in life. Despite the fact that everybody's search or journey is going to be different, we'll all experience some of the same thoughts and emotions along the way. This album in many ways speaks to the thoughts, emotions and even some of the prayers I've prayed on my journey. My prayer is that all that hear the music will be encouraged, edified and empowered as they continue in their pursuit of purpose.
Hallels: Are you currently touring in support of this new record? Where can our readers go to find out more about your tour info and music news?
Dawson: Yes, will be traveling the country over the next few months to share our music and ministry with as many people as possible. People can find out more information about us on our website www.trinitydawsonmusic.com or social media @iamtrinitymusic on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
