'Frozen' 2 News: Fans Campaign for Elsa to be a Lesbian
Frozen, which was released in 2013,was Disney's most successful animated movie ever. The movie raked in $400.7 million in North America, and an estimated $873.5 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $1.274 billion. The film made a profit of over $400 million. It is the ninth highest-grossing film(and was the fifth highest at its peak), the highest-grossing animated film, the highest-grossing 2013 film, the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures release, and the fourth highest-grossing film distributed by Disney.
The story revolves around a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal pet reindeer, and a naïve snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.
Now, Disney has been planning Frozen 2. According to Christiantimes, fans are championing for the film's lead female character Elsa to be a lesbian. Elsa is voiced primarily by Broadway actress and singer Idina Menzel. At the beginning of the film, she is voiced by Eva Bella as a young child and by Spencer Lacey Ganus as a teenager.
Fans have set off a series of tweets wanting Elsa to be a lesbian in the film's sequal. A female fan writes: "I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess. Imagine how iconic that would be." She also started the hashtag#GiveElsaAGirlfriend that sealed the trending topic in social media.
Jeffrey Marsh, also a Twitter user, tweeted,"#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because LGBT kids deserve to know that there is nothing wrong with them."
Someone using @dropdeaddixon as Twitter handle also posted, "Making a kids movie with a queer character won't make your kids gay it will teach them that love comes in many forms."
When asked about the supposed homosexual undertone in the 2013 animated film, writer and co-director Jennifer Lee told the Big Issue, "We know what we made. But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world, so I don't like to say anything, and let the fans talk. I think it's up to them."
Apparently the LGBT community has been great supporters of the movie. The movie's theme song "Let It Go" has been adopted as an anthem by the community.
