'24' Season 9 on FOX Starring Kiefer Sutherland is Back May 2014 with 12 Week Run
The popular TV show "24″ starring Jack Bauer is returning to Fox next month officially titled "24: Live Another Day" premiering May 5th. This will be the ninth season of the show and set four years after the eighth, with Jack still in exile, and this time, he and Chloe are "pitted against each other," according to Sutherland.
Executive producers Manny Coto and Evan Katz did a conference call Thursday and revealed the upcoming miniseries is indeed a one-off but didn't count out the possibility of another season or event series for "24." "It's possible certainly," said Coto. "Obviously, it will depend on eyeballs that tune in, but one thing to keep in mind is that we all came back to tell this one last story - this one last day of Jack Bauer's life. If there's more beyond, we'll cross that bridge when we get there." Coto added, "Nothing is impossible. We are treating this season as a one-time miniseries event. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The ending could be the end of '24′ for good if you look at it that way."
The producers wanted to make clear just how much had changed for Jack in those four years. "Jack doesn't fit into the world. It's a challenge for him to find his place," Coto said, referring to the events of the 24 "series" finale in which Jack had to go on the run as a fugitive from the U.S. government he supported and defended for years. "We wanted it to be something special. We also had to take into account that four years have passed and characters have changed radically."
"There were a number of political developments that we seized upon. A really interesting possible villain. Government spying on its citizens. Individuals who appear who are trying to fight that (Snowden). It also gave us an idea for what to do with Chloe O'Brien. She goes the Edward Snowden route," Coto said.
Since "24" has been off of the air for four years, they thought a shorter season might fit in better to today's television landscape. "People's viewing habits have changed, Katz said. "Asking people to devote 24 weeks is a bigger ask than it was years ago. This is more inviting. It's not going to happen all the time. It's not taking place over a year and it gives the network an opportunity to put more oomph beyond the launch."
Make sure to tune into FOX on May 5th to see the premiere of "24: Live Another Day".
