Amy Grant Responds to the Turkey-Syria Earthquake
On February 6, a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated Turkey and Syria. Hours later these countries were rocked by another 7.5-magnitude earthquake-killing more than 11,000 people and injuring thousands more. Contemporary Christian pop artist Amy Grant has taken on social media to encourage fans to pray and to help the various organizations who are trying to bring aid to the victims and their family members.
Grant writes, "The images out of Turkey and Syria are hard to wrap our heads and hearts around. The number of deaths from the earthquakes is staggering. It is hard to know what to do or how to pray in times such as this. I often think of the quote from the wonderful Fred Rogers that said `When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"
Grant draws our attention to a few organizations who are actively helping the residents in Turkey and Syria. "Today I am looking at two organizations that are there on the ground and helping. One organization is www.redcross.org. The global Red Cross and Red Crescent organization has thousands of responders on the ground providing blood, food, shelter, medical care, emergency aid supplies and mental and emotional support to people in need.
"The other organization is www.samaritanspurse.org Samaritan's Purse airlifted a 52-bed Emergency Field Hospital and dozens of medical personnel to Turkey on Feb. 9 to address the urgent physical needs of families suffering in the wake of this natural disaster. Hospital components are being transported to a town near Antakya, historically known as Antioch. In this area, where believers were first called Christians, the hospital soon will be set up to include two emergency operating rooms and a pharmacy. Emergency relief supplies, including tarps, blankets, and solar lights, are also on their way."
Grant continues to encourage fans to pray and contribute. "The destruction is unfathomable but there are helpers there now who need our support. Every little bit helps in moments such as this.Praying for God's mercy in the midst of all the pain. Please join me in immediately giving financial support. We are One."
