Faith-Based Thriller, "NEFARIOUS," Receives Rave Reviews & Endorsements

The supernatural thriller, NEFARIOUS, inspired by the book, A Nefarious Plot, by New York Times best-selling author Steve Deace, and written, produced, and directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman(GOD'S NOT DEAD, UNPLANNED), debuted in theaters across America in April. The film about the epic battle between good and evil received an impressive Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 97% and reviews and endorsements have been overwhelmingly positive, with many making comparisons to C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters.
Most reviews include a five-star rating and praise for being "thought-provoking," "riveting," "mind- blowing," and, "a must-see" movie with "superb acting" that "just may save your soul." Thanks to the popularity of the film among moviegoers and demand for tickets, the film continues to add theaters to its distribution.
The latest endorsement comes from Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, and reads:
"Beyond the real, but often sensationalized, preternatural phenomena associated with demonic activity, lies the greater horror of sin itself and of a powerful and malign will and intelligence enticing men and women to sin. Contemporary culture has done much to obscure the reality of sin and our relentless struggle against it and Satan - "a murderer from the beginning, ... a liar and the father of lies" (Jn 8,44) - , the mortal enemy of Mankind. The film, NEFARIOUS, aptly shines light on this combat and the Devil's tactics in leading us to betray and abandon Our Lord through sin. I highly commend Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon for the excellent research, care, and skill with which they have written and directed this film. May those who watch it obtain a greater awareness of the spiritual warfare in which we are all participants, and may they turn with greater fidelity and love to Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ in whom the final victory over evil and the Evil One is ever assured."
The film opened through Soli Deo Gloria Releasing and stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Jordan Belfi, and features Tom Ohmer, Eric Hansen, Stelio Savante, Robert Peters, and Cameron Arnett, with a cameo by Glenn Beck.
Film Synopsis: On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer (Flanery, BOONDOCKS SAINTS) gets a last-minute, court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. The killer astonishes visiting psychiatrist Dr. James Martin (Belfi, ENTOURAGE) by insisting that instead of trying to avoid his execution, he is in fact a demon-Nefarious-who wants his execution to go forward. As a storm gathers outside the prison, Nefarious chips away at Dr. Martin's resolve and conviction, confounding and unsettling him so much that he begins to doubt his own sanity and fears for his life. As the two face off, they deliver crackling energy and a series of disturbing preternatural revelations propelling them to an inexorable, astounding conclusion.
About the movie, the filmmakers explain: "There are monsters, and they are very, very real. Inspired by Steve Deace's invention of a master demon named 'Lord Nefarious,' we began to wonder what it would look like if someone sat down to have a conversation with such a demon. And what it would sound like, if - for reasons of his own - that demon decided to speak the absolute truth, from his point of view. What would be the dynamics of that? That's what this movie is about."
NEFARIOUS' setting inside the real Oklahoma State Reformatory, malevolent energy, and ancient yet contemporary story, bleeds through from reality to the screen...and beyond. "If we've done our job right," the filmmakers conclude, "then after watching this film, you will be convinced of the possibility of a personal, supernatural force of darkness who drives the evils of this world. What you decide to do with that knowledge will be up to you."
