Independence Day Sequel [Not One But Two Planned], Release Date, Spoilers [Set 20 Years After Independence Day 1], Teasers, Cast News [Will Smith Won’t Be In!], And More
Two sequels for Independence Day, the 1996 blockbuster hit sci-fi movie about an alien invasion of earth, have been planned to form a trilogy. The new films would be titled ID Forever Part I and ID Forever Part II, according to director and co-writer Roland Emmerich, and they will be filmed back-to-back. In fact, 20th Century Fox, has already announced that ID Forever Part I is all set for theater showing on July1, 2016, almost exactly twenty years following the release of the original Independence Day movie.
Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin, who also acts as producer, have already finished writing the scripts for the two sequels. In an interview last year with Entertainment Weekly, Emmerich revealed that the sequels will take off twenty years following the liberation of earth from the first wave of alien invaders. This time another wave of alien forces is poised to attack. "The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through the wormholes," said the director.
The script for the first sequel has already been turned over to Carter Blanchard for polishing and rewriting as part of the pre-production process. Asked about the plots of the sequels, Emmerich revealed that "the first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one, they free themselves again."
Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman have confirmed that they will be returning to reprise the characters they played in Independence Day. However, 'Capt. Hiller' won't be seen in ID Forever I and II because Will Smith declined the role which first established his name as a bankable movie star.
