Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis Passes Away at 52 After Battle With Breast Cancer

Ananda Lewis, beloved television personality, former MTV VJ, talk show host, and passionate health advocate, passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 52 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Lewis first rose to national prominence in the late 1990s as a charismatic host on MTV's Total Request Live and Hot Zone. Her intelligence, warmth, and outspoken authenticity quickly made her a household name. In 2001, she launched The Ananda Lewis Show, further showcasing her deep empathy and commitment to social issues.
Diagnosed privately in 2018 with stage III breast cancer, Ananda chose to pursue alternative therapies initially. She later went public with her journey in 2020, using her platform to advocate for early detection and women's health. In a 2024 interview, she candidly reflected on her health choices and became a vocal supporter of mammograms and preventative care.
A woman of deep spiritual conviction, Lewis's Christian faith was a cornerstone of her strength throughout her illness. In her final years, she often spoke about the role of faith in her healing journey, once stating, "Having faith in God, for me, means taking care of what God created." Her trust in God carried her through the most difficult days and inspired countless others facing similar struggles.
Lewis is survived by her son, Langston, whom she shared with Harry Smith, the younger brother of actor Will Smith. She also leaves behind a legacy of resilience, empowerment, and grace.
Memorial details will be shared by the family at a later time. In honor of Ananda, fans are encouraged to schedule their health screenings and support organizations promoting breast cancer awareness and early detection.
