Despicable Me 3 Release, Latest News: Gru and Minions Return Summer 2017 With Even More Despicable Antics!
Despicable Me 3 will be released on June 30, 2017, according to an official announcement from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment. Other than that, no specific details have been revealed about the upcoming 3-D computer-animated comedy film. It will however likely continue to follow the adventures of ex-despicable villain Felonious Gru, his assistant and love interest Lucy Wilde, their adopted daughters - Margo, Edith and Agnes - and the Minions.
Despicable 3 will likely also be a sequel film which will take off following the events last seen in Despicable Me 2 - that is, Gru and Lucy getting married, being parents to the three girls, and living in relative peace with their faithful Minions. The 2013-released Despicable Me 2 grossed more than $970 million worldwide in box office receipts and was nominated for Academy Awards for both the best animated feature and the best original song ('Happy' by Pharrell Williams) categories. The first film which set off the franchise, the 2010-released Despicable Me, grossed more than $543 million worldwide against a $69 million budget.
Before the scheduled release in 2017 of Despicable 3, the franchise will first be showing Minions, another spinoff movie which will be a prequel to the Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 films. Minions has been announce for released to theaters on July 10, 2015. The prequel is directed Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda from a script penned by Brian Lynch. It features Sandra Bullock voicing for main villain Scarlet Overkill and Jon Ham voicing for her husband, the inventor Herb Overkill. Steve Carell will be returning to the prequel to reprise his role as the voice of super-villain Felonious Gru just as director Pierre Coffin who also will be reprising the voices of Minions Kevin, Bob and Stuart. Hiroyuki Sanada and Chris Renaud will also be in the cast for still undisclosed roles. Minions is an origins film. It will show how the Minions came to be and how they ultimately ended up with Gru.
Minions was previously scheduled for a December 19, 2014, showing. It was however reset for summer of next year, which would be more in keeping with the commercially-proven successful July releases of the previous Gru-starring films, Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2.
