Black-ish TV series premieres this September 24 on ABC; Show casts honored to be compared to The Cosby Show
A new comedy series is on the ABC block.
Black-ish airs starting September 24. The show stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Laurence Fishburne.
Often compared to the eighties classic, The Cosby Show, Black-ish is about a well-off African-American family trying to maintain their cultural identity while living in a predominantly white neighborhood.
Reacting to the comparison, Anderson says, "I think it's a lovely thing that we're being compared to something as great as The Cosby Show was at its time, but we're not trying to emulate them."
In a New York Times article, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has this to say about his show: "I didn't want to tell a story about a family that happened to be black, but about a family that was actually black. I felt like race was being talked about less than ever, when I feel it should be talked about more."
Anderson and Ross will play Andre and Rainbow Johnson. Laurence Fishburne of The Matrix and CSI fame has a recurring role as Andre's father.
Black-ish TV joins the ABC's roster of family-centric shows such as The Middle, The Goldbergs, and Modern Family.
