'Utopia' TV series news: Show Makers Need to Address Growing Viewer Decine
FOX's first reality series was as promising as any reality show before it. It should be given that creators of successful reality shows are the ones creating it. We have David Tibballs of "Dragon's Den," John De Mol of "Big Brother," Jon Kroll of "The Amazing Race" and Conrad Green of "Dancing with the Stars." With these powerhouse creators backing the show up, what could go wrong?
But the show did hit some major decline in terms of ratings as viewers began dwindling in a weekly basis. This means that every time the show airs, there is a huge decline of viewers. This more that alarming given that the show creators purportedly expended $50 million to put up the show.
When it first aired back in Sept. 7, "Utopia" got a decent 4.63 million viewers. However in the succeeding weeks, the decline was found to be very significant. On the second week of airing, it only drew 2.48 million viewers. That is around 54.5% decline, and it did not stop there. As of Sept 19, it garnered its lowest number of viewers at only 1.52 million, a glaring 67% drop from its original number of viewers. Although the previous week reportedly did a lot better than the previous ones, it is still a far cry from the ratings that other reality shows are garnering. As a result, the show is now facing cancellation unless the show runners are able to come up with viable solutions to address this rapid decline.
The network is presently making some changes with the show. One of these is the introduction of a new voting system in order to determine who gets out of the so new members can be pulled in. This can bring some major changes, and hopefully more viewers get interested.
"Utopia," makes use of some mechanics of reality shows like "Big Brother" but on a wider scale. The show can be better seen as a social experiment wherein 14 complete strangers are put together in a secluded place with no electricity or plumbing. The goal is to build a society from scratch. What makes the show unique is that the time frame is one year, unlike most reality shows that only covers 3 months.
The show can be easily summed up with how the premiere described it to be:
"They've got limited supplies, wildly diverse backgrounds, and zero bathrooms. The Utopians will make every decision about how they live and work. Will they choose democracy, or dictatorship? Capitalism or socialism? Fidelity or free love? Which religion, if any, will prevail? Will they punish or forgive? Keep or share?"
Because of the unique voting system, casting for the show is still ongoing. This is because a present member of the show can be voted out and replaced by those contending to join.
"Utopia" runs every Tuesdays and Fridays at 8/7c on FOX.
