Emma Stone Talks About Transition from 'Birdman' Movie to Brodway Play 'Cabaret'
The upcoming Birdman movie co-stars Emma Stone as the daughter and personal assistant of Riggan Thompson (Michael Keaton) who is a former movie star looking to make a comeback on Broadway.
This was a good role for Stone to take on as her real life career is moving in the opposite direction from movies to Broadway as she gets ready to make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret beginning Nov. 11th.
At a press conference following a New York Film Festival screening of Birdman, Stone shared about making the transition from movies to the stage. "Well, you know, I did write the character of Sally Bowles, and I am directing the production," joked Stone, who's replacing another movie star, Michelle Williams, in the role. "No, of course, this movie brings up a lot of horrible fears of coming into the Broadway community and having Tabitha be your reviewer."
Stone said that shooting Birdman was good preparation for Broadway with "extreme rehearsals" required for the technically challenging production with long takes and tricky camera moves. "Making this movie, and what we had to contend with as actors... needing to rely on each other the way that a company does, is incredibly helpful now going into theater," she said. "We all operated as a unit, and on a lot of films its not that way at all. It's a very separate experience." As for her Cabaret performance, Stone added: "Yes, I'm nervous. I'm terrified."
Michael Keaton is back with his starring role in the upcoming Birdman movie. The Alejandro González Iñárritu's dark comedy stars Keaton along with Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts.
Birdman is scheduled to release to theaters this coming weekend on October 17th.
Birdman tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) -- famous for portraying an iconic superhero -- as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
On July 10, 2014, it was announced that Birdman had been selected as the opening film of the 71st Venice International Film Festival and would be in competition for the Golden Lion.
