Whisper App is Being Accused of Privacy Breach
Uncertainties are now circulating over the privacy of the new online social network application Whisper.
The Whisper is a new application has its roots in Southern California. It enables people to post messages anonymously.
This feature, however, is now taking negative feedbacks from some groups and other technology enthusiasts. They doubt on what Whisper has taken pride of which is the anonymity of the one posting the message.
In a report from The New York Times, it cited a report that The Guardian has accused Whisper of actually recording the data location of the users. Accordingly, even if there is no data locator, Whisper still enables to collect the area of its users.
Allegedly, The Guardian also claimed that Whisper is having links to the Defense Department. It reportedly collects data for a research study of the Defense Department about suicide incidents. This is, accordingly, being done without the knowledge of the users.
These accusations were denied by Whisper's management.
In a press statement, the company emphasized that "Whisper does not collect nor store name, physical address, phone number, email address or any other form." It assured its users that utmost privacy is being observed in terms of the details of the users. The company added that the Whisper has not violated any rights of privacy among its users and followers.
Meanwhile, online news media BuzzFeed said that it has temporarily closed a content partnership with Whisper. This is until issues of privacy concerns will be addressed immediately. This is for Whisper to clarify the security measures it has as far as protecting the private details of its users.
Another online media site, Fusion, is said to do the same closure of a partnership with Whisper.
Upon during its release, Whisper takes pride of its main feature which is allowing its users to post anything online with anonymous identity. This has been the major come-on of Whisper as many people want to post their secrets, emotions, anger and other innermost thoughts without using their real names.
