Veronica Mars is coming back to the big screen this month with the release of the feature film to theaters around the U.S. on March 14th. The American mystery-drama film picks up the characters from the television series and brings them ahead to current times. The Warner Bros. movie stars Kristen Bell and is directed by Rob Thomas.
In the film, Veronica Mars has put Neptune and her amateur sleuthing days behind her on the eve of graduating law school. While interviewing at high-end law firms, Veronica gets a call from her ex-boyfriend Logan who has been accused of murder. Veronica heads back to Neptune just to help Logan find an attorney, but when things don't seem right with how Logan's case is perceived and handled, Veronica finds herself being pulled back into a life she thought she had left behind.
Following the series' cancellation, Rob Thomas wrote a feature film script continuing the storyline, but Warner Bros. Pictures opted not to fund the project at the time. On March 13, 2013, Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched a fundraising campaign to produce the film through Kickstarter, offering various incentives to those who donated $10 or more. Bell, Thomas, Enrico Colantoni, Ryan Hansen, and Jason Dohring appeared in a video promoting the campaign, and it attained the $2 million goal in less than ten hours. In its first day on Kickstarter, the project broke the record as the fastest project to reach first $1 million, then $2 million; it also achieved the highest minimal pledging goal achieved and was the largest successful film project on Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign ended on April 13, with 91,585 donors raising $5,702,153.
Shooting for the film began in June 2013 in Los Angeles and filming ended in December after having to re-shoot a few scenes. Veronica Mars stars Bell along with Jason Dohring, Chris Lowell, Ryan Hansen, Krysten Ritter, Percy Daggs III, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra Ken Marino and Enrico Colantoni.
